What to Know Before Taking Jazz Dance Classes

Jazz dance is best known for its liveliness, with abrupt, energetic movements that distinguish it from most other dance forms. Although this style tends to be more rigorous, we encourage all dancers to participate in the endurance-building, serotonin-boosting movement!

Here’s what to know before taking a jazz dance class:

Make Sure You’re On Time!

We say this with any class, but we highly recommend students show up on time (or even a little early) to warm up, get loose and prepare for instruction. It’s especially important to prepare with jazz classes because for the next 45 minutes or so, we’ll pretty much be moving non-stop! Taking the right precautions will help you avoid injuries or discomfort with any class— make sure you’re with us for warm-ups!

Class Structure

Jazz classes typically mirror ballet in many ways, so it might look a bit familiar if you’ve taken lessons before. We’ll start with warm-ups, stretching and strengthening, and progressions, then come back to center for a combination. You’ll want to make sure you don’t miss a lesson, because we learn something new every time, especially in a jazz dance class for beginners! If you are absent one day, ask one of the instructors and we’ll make sure you’re caught up for next time.

Jazz is Fast Paced

As we’re sure you’ve noticed, there’s constant, spirited movement in Jazz dance. Over time, you’ll notice heightened endurance, increased strength and enhanced flexibility, but it might feel a bit extreme at first! Make sure to give yourself time to adapt to the pace of the class, take breaks when you need them, and most importantly— push yourself! For some, it might not come as quickly, but we don’t want you to be discouraged. We’ve watched brand new dance students catch on within a couple of lessons.
